As a geologist, I traipsed the globe to conduct fieldwork -- from the surreal hills of southern China to the barren red expanses of Western Australia, from the stark but subtly teeming tundra of Spitsbergen to the foul-smelling hot springs of Kamchatka.

I was looking for signs of life, from microbes with exotic metabolisms to the fossils of the first animals on earth. These extreme landscapes and the practices of observation and experimentation continue to shape my work.

I have always been fascinated by how we observe and experiment on ourselves, even more so as we increasingly view ourselves through an outside perspective, always performing. How do we present ourselves, what of our subtle expressions and poses?
